Bill Picketts brings a wealth of experience to LA Pierce College both as head coach as well as a player. Bill began his collegiate playing career at College of the Canyons, then transferred to Long Beach State. As a member of the Original Dirtbags team in 1989, Bill played in the College World Series and was eventually drafted in the 12th round by the Oakland Athletics out of Cal State LA. After his minor league career ended, Bill transitioned directly into coaching. First in the high school ranks as an assistant at Saugus High School then returning to College of the Canyons as an assistant for over 15 years. After one year as the head assistant to John Bushart at LA Pierce College, Bill took over the reins in 2015 and has been the Head Coach ever since. Just recently, Bill was named as the manager of Team Philippines in the upcoming World Baseball Classic Qualifier and will have the opportunity to coach former San Francisco Giants player Chase d’Arnaud and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow.
Known for his ability to develop his players, Bill has coached dozens of players that have reached the 4-year level as well as several players that have been drafted by Major League teams, including Juan Perez, Cory Jones, Casey Ryan, Tommy Wilson, and Brandon Lewis, just to name a few. As proud as he is with the number of professional players that have come through his program, Bill’s greatest source of pride is seeing his student-athletes move on and achieve academic success, especially his son Will Picketts, who played at LA Pierce College for two years under his father, moved on to CSU Bakersfield and will attain his degree at the end of the 2020 Spring Semester.
Bill, a local product who graduated from John F. Kennedy High School in Granada Hills and captured a City Championship in 1985, has been married for over 25 years to his college sweetheart Eden, a Registered Nurse and administrator at the Veterans Hospital. They have two sons, Will, 21, a senior at CSU Bakersfield and Jake, 10, a 5th grader at Stevenson Ranch Elementary. Bill earned his bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology at CSU Northridge and his master’s degree in Kinesiology from Fresno Pacific University.
